Autumn marks the transition of summer into winter, a period of change that some may find melancholic and saddening, others have gone so far as to refer to it as an unhealthy season. It’s not all doom and gloom though, autumn brings with it some fantastic scenery and vibrant, colourful foliage.

The Colours of Autumn at Westonbirt Arboretum

One of the most attractive areas to see the true beauty of autumn is Westonbirt Arboretum near Stroud, home to 15,000 trees of over 2,500 different types and a plethora of plant species from across the globe. Westonbirt Arboretum is situated around 13 miles south of Stroud, Gloucestershire and attracts over 350,000 visits per year. Its colours in the autumn and rhododendron, magnolia and azalea plant displays in spring have affirmed its reputation internationally, and since 2001 has even hosted its own music festival featuring acts such as Jessie J and Ed Sheeran.

The Arboretum features 17 miles of accessible paths and consists of three main areas: the Old Arboretum, Silk Wood and the Downs each with their own unique characteristics. Luckily, the Forestry Commission have created a map to help you navigate the area. The Old Arboretum is a delicately designed landscape dating back from the 1850’s which offers stately avenues and beautiful views.

If you have a dog then take note, the Old Arboretum doesn’t allow them, but don’t worry, the ancient Silk Wood is dog friendly and represents two thirds of the Arboretum providing plenty of space for your dog to explore. The grade 1 registered Downs features a species-rich grassland and is an ideal picnicking location or rest spot after you’ve trekked around the surrounding forests.
